Supporting Black Mental Health- Together
—Your mental health matters. Let’s talk about it–
At ACOMI, we care deeply about mental health because we know it’s the foundation of strong, thriving communities. For African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) communities in Canada, mental health challenges can feel overwhelming. Systemic barriers, cultural stigma, and a lack of resources that truly understand our experiences make it harder to get the support we need. That’s why we’ve created a community-driven approach to mental health—one that is developed by us, for us.
What We Do
We put mental health on the community’s agenda by creating a cultural safe space for community discussions on mental health. We address mental health within the broader framework of mental wellbeing, and we focus on prevention and ensuring our community has access to mental health support services and tools.
Here’s how we’re doing it:
Wellness Check Programs
During the pandemic, we teamed up with 10 local groups to reach over 2,200 people through our Mental Health and Wellness Check Program. We focused on tackling issues like isolation and helping families spot early signs of mental health challenges.
Cultural Appropriate Tools That Understand You
We partnered African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) organizations to create the Black Mental Health Promotion Toolkit, a resource made by ABC communities, for ABC communities. It’s packed with practical tips and tools to help you, and your loved ones stay mentally well. Available on blackmentalhealthpromotion.ca
Safe Spaces to Talk
Through our network of 50+ community partners, we’ve hosted conversations about mental health to break down stigma and make it easier to talk openly. These discussions are safe, judgment-free spaces where everyone’s voice matters.
Connecting You to Support
In 2024, we hosted a Community Town Hall on Mental Wellness, where we connected people with Black mental health professionals and services. Because getting help should never feel out of reach. Check out peacewholenesscentre.com
Integrating Mental Health in Every Program
We’ve woven mental health awareness into all our programs—whether it’s for seniors, youth, or newcomers. Because everyone deserves to feel supported.
